Once you purchase a stone vessel sink, it is important to follow the proper care instruction to maintain your stone sink and keep it looking new even years after purchase. If a stain appears on the sink be sure to follow proper cleaning instructions to take it out because if it’s not removed, it will penetrate into the stone and eventually become permanent. Depending on the type of stone you have, cleaning instructions may vary.
- Granite
Granite is one of the most durable and stain-resistant stones. To clean a granite sink be sure to use a mild soap solution and apply it in circular motion. Remember to rinse thoroughly once the cleaning process is complete. To avoid any hard water depots make sure to clean the sink regularly. Be sure to avoid any hard chemicals and never use pure bleach directly on the sink. To remove stains you can try Soft Scrub® or a dishwashing liquid to get the stain out.
- Marble
Marble is a beautiful stone with a polished finish. Because it is a porous stone, it is advisable to seal it prior to use. Sealing the sink will prevent the stains from being absorbed through the stone’s pores. Remember not to use any cleaning solutions that may be acidic as this will dull the beautiful shine of marble. Be sure to only use a mild soap solution for everyday care and never use any harsh or abrasive chemicals. Because marble is shiny, water stains are a bit more noticeable. To avoid having water stains on marble sinks, always remember to rinse and dry the sink after use.
- Limestone
This exceptional stone typically has fossils imbedded in it. It is highly recommended to seal this type of sink in order to avoid damage and excessive staining.
- Soapstone
Soapstone has a delicate silk-like finish. Because it’s very dense it does not stain easily. A mild soap solution is used to clean a sink made out of soapstone. Furthermore, it is advisable to apply mineral oil to the sink to keep it looking new.
If a stain appears on your sink, you should try the following steps to remove it prior to consulting a professional:
- Clean the sink with a stone cleaner that has a neutral pH. Try to avoid any abrasive cleaners as this may damage the stone sink.
- Try wetting the sink surface prior to applying the cleaner, this will allow the cleaner to stay on longer before it dries.
- Apply a solution, called a poultice, which will remove the stain by absorbing it. You can purchase the poultice in most hardware stores.
- Apply the poultice to the stain and cover it with saran wrap. Be sure to tape the wrap down and let it sit for 24 hours.
- After 24 hours, remove the saran wrap and let it dry. As the poultice dries, it will absorb the stain and pull it out of the stone. Once the poultice is dry, you can scrape it off the sink. Any remaining residue that wasn’t scraped off can be washed away with a mild soap solution. Once the sink dries, the stain should be gone. Please note, some stones are more porous and therefore take longer to dry.
